JUBA: Turnout in Southern Sudan vote passes 60 per cent

14.01.2011
More than 60 per cent of the registered voters cast their votes in an independence referendum, reaching the finishing line of the percentage required for Southern Soudern to remain part of north or to be announced as the new country of Southern Sudan. It is a landmark for Southern Sudan as thousands of people began casting ballots Sunday during a weeklong vote to choose the destiny of this war-ravaged and desperately poor but oil-rich region.
On Wednesday more than 2.3 voters cast their votes and more are expected to vote before the referendum closes on Saturday.  “We are already above the threshold yesterday (Wednesday) some 2.3 million plus and more today”, Chan Reec Referendum Commission Deputy Chairma, said.
The former US president Jimmy Carter who is leading international observers in Southern Sudan referendum told journalists that the voting exercise is going to meet high global standards. “ We have two more days to obviously but I don’t think there is any doubt the result will be accepted without serious challenge”, he added.
Carter told journalists on Thursday he also believed that international creditors should forgive most if not all of Sudan crippling debt, to give both north and south access to fresh funds to cope with the shock of separation.
