President Mwai Kibaki arrived back in the country this evening from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia where he attended the 18th Extra Ordinary Summit of the Inter Government Agency on Development (IGAD) Heads of State and Government.
During the Summit, IGAD Heads of State and Government reviewed the latest developments on implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) on Sudan with a view to make a breakthrough on the pending issues.
The IGAD Summit also reflected on the challenges posed by extremist and subversive elements in the region.
Pending issues under the CPA, discussed by the IGAD Heads of State and Government, included demarcation of the common boundary and the dispute over the oil rich Abyei region.
Addressing the Summit, President Kibaki who is the Chair of the IGAD Sub-Committee on the Sudan, impressed on parties to the CPA to continue to
dialogue on key issues that remained outstanding even after Southern Sudan was declared an independent state this month.
He congratulated the Sudanese people for walking together in the long journey of implementing the Comprehensive Peace Agreement which formally
ends on the 9th July 2011.
The Head of State reiterated that Kenya remains steadfast in its support to both the North and Southern Sudan to succeed in forging harmonious relations.
Achieving sustainable peace in the Sudan, President Kibaki said, remained a matter of collective interest in the Horn of Africa region.
With regard to the Somalia peace process, the President further called on the international community, in particular the UN Security Council to provide the necessary support for sustainable peace and development in Somalia.
IGAD member states include the current chair and host Ethiopia, Djibouti, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda.
The plane carrying President Kibaki and his entourage touched down at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport shortly after 7.00 pm
On arrival the head of state was warmly received by the vice president Kalonzo Musyoka, Head of Public Service and Secretary to cabinet Amb. Francis Muthaura and Chief of Defence forces Gen. Jeremiah Kianga among other senior government officials.
