Following requests from and petitions by various party branches, Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who is also the Party Leader of the Orange Democratic Movement, has announced the postponement of the Party grassroots elections by one week
The ODM elections that were to kick off on the 27th of May 2011 will now be held from June 3 to June 6, 2011.
Some branches like Nairobi and Western had concentrated their efforts on the Kamukunji and Ikolomani by-elections and had therefore not put in place proper mechanisms for the elections. A number of other branches also requested for a little more time to work out proper logistics for the elections.
The Party however agreed that it is necessary to hold the elections simultaneously in all parts of the country. The postponement of the elections nationwide by one week is therefore meant to allow all the branches make adequate preparations and then have the elections kick off everywhere at once.
Details touching on unique requirements of various regions, including those areas that cannot hold elections over the Sabbath, will be provided by the Party Secretariat and Elections Board.
