On 11 May 2011, the High Court confirmed the current officials of the Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) as legitimately in office.
The court threw out an application filed by former secretary-general Eric Orina on 24 November 2010, challenging the registration of the current team led by secretary-general Jared Obuya.
Justice Musinga observed that the application had been overtaken by events and ordered the former secretary-general to pay the costs of the suit.
In the same ruling, the court dismissed a petition by Orina, seeking to compel the Registrar of Trade Unions to register him as COTU secretary-general.
The judge noted that Orina lacked the locus standi to prosecute the petition or any application on the matter since he had been removed as the secretary-general of the KUJ on 30 October 2010.
The ruling brings to a rest any confusion that may have arisen as to the leadership of the union.
