NAIROBI: PRESS RELEASE, KAMUKUNJI PARLIAMENTARY CANDIDATES PUBLIC FORUM (11th May, 2011)

Kituo Cha Sheria in partnership with Kamukunji Community Based Organizations Network (KCBONET) will on 11th May, 2011 (next Wednesday), hold a public forum for the aspirants of the Kamukunji Constituency by-election that is scheduled for 23rd May, 2011.
The forum will be held at the Pumwani Social Hall, as from 9.00am to 2.00pm, and will be moderated by Louis Otieno who is well known for conducting reformative Town Hall meetings across the country
The residents of Kamukunji have over time suffered due to bad governance and the issues they want addressed include:
-          Frequent evictions, land grabbing and housing
-          Police conduct
-          Use of devolved funds especially CDF, Public Participation in devolved funds and project prioritization of public funds
-          State of roads in Kamukunji
-          Cost of living
This forum is going to give them a platform to air their grievances, put the aspirants to task and constructively engage them on how they will articulate their grievances if elected.
Focus is on the Kamukunji by-elections. Unfortunately, focus is on political gimmicks. The media can shift the focus to issues and expectations of residents, to ensure the voices of Kenyans is heard. The voting pattern in Kamukunji may very well be an indicator of what to be expected in the next General Elections.
All parliamentary candidates running in this election have been invited and they have all confirmed attendance. They include:
-          James Matagaro              Kenya Social Congress
-          David Waihiga                               Agano Party
-          Hassan Yusuf                                   ODM-K/PNU
-          Ibrahim “Johnie” Ahmed            ODM
-          Catherine Muthoni                       GNU
-          Daniel Ondiere                   Ford People
-          Brian Weke                           Narc Kenya
The media is a key partner in economic, social and political development, and we look forward to your attendance in this forum that espouses the spirit of Public participation, and that will significantly influence the nature of relationship between representatives and their constituents in Kamukunji, which can be replicated in other constituencies.
