NAIROBI:Mayor Aladwa urges Parliament to back Dr. Mutunga and Nancy Baraza

Sun, May 22, 2011 3:14:47 PM

Acting Nairobi Mayor Mr. George Aladwa has exuded confidence that
Parliament will next week approve the names of Dr. Willy Mutunga and
Ms. Nancy Baraza to the offices of the Chief Justice and Deputy Chief
Justice respectively.
In a statement, Mr. Aladwa, who is also the ODM Councillor for
Kaloleni/Makongeni Ward said the appointments of the two Senior
Counsels by the Judicial Service Commission and subsequent approval of
the same by President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga was
a move in the right direction especially at this moment when Kenyans
are yearning for reforms in the Judiciary.
He said the two were able members of the Kenyan Public who are
competent enough to ensure the rot in the Judiciary is cleaned up for
better service delivery to the Public.
Mr. Aladwa called on Parliamentarians to put aside their partisan
politics
and approve the appointments of Dr. Mutunga, Ms. Baraza and
the Director of Public Prosecutions Mr. Keriako Tobiko to bring about
the judicial independence which is long overdue.
Mr. Aladwa cited Friday’s last minute ruling by High Court Judge
Justice Daniel Musinga, blocking the Kamukunji By-Elections as an
example of the ‘bad rulings’ that are made not in the interest of the
public.
He said the ruling which came on the last day of the campaigns to the
By-Election was ill-motivated.
At the same time, Mr. Aladwa has thanked the Government for releasing
Ksh. 1.8 Billion for LATF to the Nairobi City Council.
He says, although the Council expected Ksh. 2.3 Billion, the amount
released was enough to help in the completion of projects in all the
Wards of the City Council. He said, the money will not go towards the
payment of salaries but it will be distributed amongst all the Wards
for development projects.
Mr. Aladwa urged the government to release the remaining Ksh. 500
Million when available.
Meanwhile, Mr. Aladwa says the City Council of Nairobi Councillors are
prepared for the forth-coming Mayoral elections scheduled for August
this year. He says, the public will be notified of the date for the
elections once it is set by the Council.
