Nairobi – February 16, 2011
Mr. Oparanya praised the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) saying it was one of the most dedicated development partners owing to its longest track record in assisting the countries in the region to develop their statistical capacity.
"Since its inception in 1958, UNECA has done much. It was especially active in collaborating with national statistical institutions in the 1970s and 1980s. Other donors have realized the importance of good data in development," he added.
The World Bank and the African Development Bank, he said are also very instrumental donor organizations together with other bilateral donors currently operating in Africa .
"We in Kenya have been pleased to note that ACBF has also joined the impressive list of donors to this good cause," said the minister.
Besides, he said there was need to stress on the highest analytical skills in assisting policy-making noting that data alone would not improve policy-making unless it is read, analyzed and explained convincingly to policy makers and the general public.
In this regard, Oparanya called for increased capacity for data analyses, publication and dissemination in Africa to help enrich public policy debate upon its availability to all stakeholders including the press, civil society, academics and parliaments.
