California State University in Los Angeles:PRIME MINISTER RAILA MEETS OVER 400 KENYANS IN US

Prime Minister Raila Odinga today called on Kenyans to re-invent the self-confidence and big dreams that characterized the earlier years of independence if the country is to remain competitive.
At a meeting with over 400 Kenyans in the US West Coast states held at the California State University in Los Angeles, Mr Odinga said something went wrong with the country from the late 1960s, and Kenyans lost faith in their ability to chart their destiny.
Speakers at the function, including Kenya’s best known writer Prof Ngugi wa Thiongo, singled out bad governance, the culture of betrayal and tribalism as the ills that killed the country’s ambitious dreams.
Mr Odinga said that about three years after independence, the Government declared that Kenya would attain a developed country status by 1990, and the goal looked attainable.
He recalled that after the Olympic games of 1968, the government declared that Kenya would bid to host the 1980 Olympics, and there was agreement that the country was equal to the task.
"Six years ago, when our minister for sports announced that Kenya would bid to host the 2016 Olympics, the overall feeling was that we were joking. That was a far cry from the feeling in 1968 when we agreed we could host the games or 1964 when we believed we could attain Developed Country Status by 1990. Forty years in to independence, the self-confidence of the people is gone," Mr Odinga said.
The PM said that whereas in the 1960s, the victory over the mighty British empire by ill-equipped Mau filled Kenyans with a conquering spirit, the dictatorship and suppression that followed killed initiative and the confidence of the people.
"The conquering spirit that brought down the British was still burning in Kenyans in the 1960s. That spirit died between 1968 and 2000. Repression made Kenyans submissive and hopeless, then we split along tribal lines and things changed for the worse," the PM said.
Mr Odinga said Kenya is once again caught in a struggle pitting the forces for change against those of the status quo, adding that this has been the struggle in Kenya over the years.
But he expressed confidence that this time round, the forces of change will take over power in Kenya.
"People can gang up along tribal lines but in the end, it never counts. I have seen this tribal arithmetic before, and it never works. In 2002 when I declared support for President Kibaki, some said Raila is finished. They began writing my political obituary because they reasoned that the Luo would never vote for a Kikuyu. I have seen all this posturing before," he said.
Prof Ngugi decried the culture of betrayal, amnesia and emerging tribalism, saying they have killed the fighting spirit of the people of Kenya.
Ngugi said the culture of betrayal ensured the Mau Mau was forgotten as soon as independence was won. It also ensured the likes of Tom Mboya and JM Kariuki were forgotten as soon as they were assassinated. Events that shaped Kenya were also forgotten, he said.
"When the British left, we began to behave as if independence had been given on a silver platter. We forgot the fighters. In 1992, violence gripped Kenya because some people had asked for multiparty politics. That too was forgotten and it happened again 1997 and 2002 and we kept forgetting until it happened again in 2007, he said.
At the function, Ngugi presented Mr Odinga with a photo taken in 1964 in which Kenya’s first Vice president Jaramogi Oginga Odinga had paid Mr Ngugi a visit at his home on being released from detention.
Ngugi said leaders should be held culpable when they fail to protect the sanctity of the lives of citizens.
He condemned the tribal talk taking root in the country’s politics saying ability to mobilize tribesmen is not a mark of leadership.
"No leader should talk as if he is at war with another community. No leaders should talk as if it is some kind of a crime to belong to a tribe," Ngugi said.
The PM’s meeting with Diaspora drawn from the West Coast states was his last function in the US. On Monday, Mr Odinga leaves for France where he is to launch a partnership between the French government and Kenya on clean energy.

NAIROBI: Uhuru denies losing Sh840m after Hague trip

The front page article in 'The Standard' this morning is an atrocious falsehood and part of the current conspiracy to discredit the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Uhuru Kenyatta. The description, the blogs (which specifically mention his name) plus the fact that only he reported a lost bag, make it very clear that the accusations are specifically against the DPM.

His assistant left one of his bags on the plane on Monday morning when they arrived back in Nairobi. All his bags had been subjected to normal security screening and scanning in Amsterdam.

When the assistant went back to look for it, it was missing and the matter was reported to Kenya Airways and the police. The contents were detailed to the police and they are still tracing this bag.

USD10m in USD100 notes weighs 100 kg is 4 cubic feet and the bag was a small computer bag. This just confirms how ludicrous the report is.

Carrying that amount of cash is in contravention of many laws and constitutes a serious crime. The most serious being money laundering, which legislation the DPM was instrumental in having passed.

The statement was not verified with either the DPM, the police nor any other authority.

The DPM has therefore instructed his lawyers to take immediate legal action against the Standard for publishing such atrocious false hoods and has reported the matter to the police and requested them to investigate the very serious crimes that are committed by anyone who makes such serious false accusations.

The consequences of such accusations are even more serious as they would mean his contravention of the Court Order issued by the Judges of the ICC. It appears that the object of the false accusations was an attempt to seriously prejudice the DPM’s position before the court in the Hague.

It is extremely disappointing that there are forces that will go to such lengths and write such obviously false statements in order to discredit the DPM. It is of extreme concern that the media can publish such unverified falsehoods. It is very important that the police find and expose the persons behind these atrocious accusations and that the media are taken to task for publishing, what is so obviously, a malicious and false report.

NAIROBI: DROUGHT APPEAL

I’m writing to you on behalf of The NORTHERN KENYA CAUCUS, an amazing organization committed to the noble idea of creating a fresh reality to the people of Kenya’s North and that provides Emergency relief operations for Hungry and Drought stricken of all tribes that live in Northern Kenya. An Organization that came with a noble of idea of "Skip A lunch" and feed Millions of People affected by Drought and Hunger combined with lack of Water in Northern Kenya. We have been mandated to help fight poverty in all sectors, be it During Emergencies, Education, Health and Social Welfare of our people. We help our people to start helping themselves and communities in order to attain self-sufficiency and prosperity.
The reason for our letter is simple, we are undertaking an Initiative to go to Mandera District of Northern Kenya to help distribute food and Water to people who are very much affected by the current drought and it is my personal goal to raise USD$50,000/= in support of the communities residing in Mandera District and other drought and famine stricken areas of Northern Kenya.
For the past one year, Northern Kenya Caucus has been working to assist local community development projects for the benefit of the people of Northern Kenya. Our primary objective is set to inspire communities living in Northern Kenya to tackle their issues and problems in a way that will bring development to them by working with all sectors responsible for development and matters Government so that they achieve immediate and lasting change in their lives.
To date, we have done our best to formulate ways in which we can assist Northern Kenya Communities through broad approaches to issues affecting them which has solutions in long term projections. There is a lot of humanitarian and long term projects to do in Northern Kenya but a case in hand is, the implementation of an irrigation scheme to help North Pokot Villages at Lomut and Sigor adjacent areas serving west and North Pokot counties and which will make Pokot County attain self sufficiency in food production. We are committed to building on these and other accomplishments to improve the quality of life in the greater Northern Kenya region. You may see the detailed Maps on our Weblog, http://nkcaucus.blogspot.com
NORTHERN KENYA CAUCUS is taking an initiative dubbed" fight Against hunger" through to Mandera West, Mandera Central and Mandera East. It costs a bag of maize approximately USD $ 25/=(Twenty Five Dollars) to feed a family of 40 people for one week and a further USD $ 25/=(Twenty Five Dollars) to get them water for drinking for themselves and their animals. This will sustain them as we set up a long term goal to sustain these communities once and for all and your donation will go directly toward providing these much needed programs to a very deserving group of people. To some outside Kenya, the sum of USD $50/= may seem very little money and for those in Kenya, A simple lunch will cost you some Ksh500-1000(USD$ 10-20) but to these people, it counts much. The Sum of USD $ 50,000/= may seem a hurdle like a lot of money to raise, however as a group, We know we can do it. Every dollar counts and whether you can make a $15 or $200 donation it will mean a great deal to us at NORTHERN KENYA CAUCUS and to the people in NEP even more.

WAHINGTON: PRIME MINISTER MEETS VICE PRESIDENT JOE BIDEN

Prime Minister Rila Odinga met US Vice President Joe Biden at the White House on Tuesday for talks on changes taking place in Kenya, Sudan and Somalia.
Mr Odinga briefed the Vice President on developments in the country following the promulgation of the new constitution last year and current efforts to implement the new laws within the set time lines.
The PM thanked the US government for its help with the reform process and its continued support in the areas of healthcare, education and food security.
He also urged the US leadership to encourage American businesses to set up operations in Kenya, saying the new laws being implemented will make the country a good investment destination.
The US vice president congratulated Kenya for moving towards stability following the chaos of 2008. He emphasised the need for the country to stay focused particularly on judicial and electoral reforms saying a functional and independent judiciary is a critical consideration for investors who want to set up operations in any foreign location.
He also called for a faithful implementation of laws pertaining to devolution which will transfer power from the centre to the regions.
Mr Biden pledged that once reforms are in place, America will give Kenya "tremendous support" in areas that are critical to the country’s growth adding that the US recognises that while the reforms carry promise for Kenya, they also cost more.
On regional issues, Mr Biden asked the Kenya government to continue providing leadership on Southern Sudan matters. He pledged the US wouldwill continue working with Kenya closely to ensure stability in the region.
The two leaders discussed the need to remain focused on pending issues in Sudan, particularly on Abyei and Darfur, to secure a lasting peace.
Mr Odinga later held talks with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Africa at Capitol Hill.

OPEN LETTER TO KENYAN POLITICAL LEADERS: BUILD GBAGBO-LIKE BUNKER

Gbagbo captured

By Boniface Manyala
13th April 2011

Ivory Coast's former president Laurent Gbagbo was on Monday captured by forces of Alassane Ouattara, the internationally recognized leader of the country and subsequently handed over to Mr. Ouattara.

Pictures splashed to the world of Gbabgo in custody wearing a white vest can easily be described as embarrassing. Here was a man who not long ago was Ivory Coast’s most powerful person appearing in a sweaty undershirt after being captured by Ouattara's forces.

Media reports indicated that he was captured when his bunker hideout was on fire.

Gbagbo's end time was interesting.  His appearance on TV may have been humiliating but the guy is said to have stubbornly refused to sign a statement ceding his claim to be the legitimate leader of Ivory Coast. Africa is full of drama if anyone is looking for an award winning movie storyline.

Alassane Ouattara, the recognized winner of elections, on the other hand was seen on state television looking very presidential and promising among other things, that Gbagbo would face justice. That is how it must be. Again, here a man whose desire to rule forcefully has led to several deaths and destruction.

As that country turns that painful page in its history, as Alassane Ouattara put it, it got me thinking just how many other leaders in Africa, and Kenya particularly would need that Gbagbo-like bunker to protect them from attacks when their day comes.

You see, Kenya like Ivory Coast has her own political Gbagbos and these people trust me will do anything to seize and control political power. If there’s anything that the disputed 2007 general elections should teach us as Kenyans is that political leadership is highly competitive and can result in serious loss of lives and destruction especially if the leadership is unwilling to compromise.

I am personally a peace loving Kenyan. And Kenyans in general are peace loving people, however, we must admit how easy it is for us to be misguided by our various political leaders to carry out atrocities and commit heinous crimes in their names. It has happened in this country before. It can happen again. As Kenyans, our prayer should be that the Ivory Coast situation does not befall us and neither does the 2007/2008 post-poll situation.

But as we reflect on the Gbagbo fate, just curiously I should ask, have our political leaders drawn any lesson from Gbagbo’s humiliating capture? There are very many lessons to learn from him. One of them that they could easily overlook which is so crucial is this: the fortified bunker.

History has well documented that brutal, despotic leaders, some of whom we have in Kenya have always scampered to their bunkers as a last resort. In fact leaders of most nations have them.  German war leaders hid in bunkers built in Berlin. The Hamas know this. Their sorry leaders build them and hide in them.

We may remember that former Iraq President Sadam Hussein was also captured hiding in Hilter-style bunker.

I hope that our political leaders will not miss this: the bunker. This is one facility they will need when everything else has failed. When your loyal supporters and tribesmen will have been scattered to the four winds and your army men or armed militia can hold no more, common sense should tell you that you will need a bunker. So go ahead, build a bunker.
